Neighborhoods:
Westwood, Mar Lee, Harvey Park
Program:
Traffic Calming Program
Project Status:
Design
Project Description:
This project includes safety improvements to South Irving St corridor between Kentucky Ave and Amherst Ave. We heard from the community that speeding along the corridor is a concern, crossing the street can be challenging, and that on-street parking is important. Improvements are being delivered in phases, each building on the last to create a safer, slower street over time.
-
Phase 1 & 2: Improvements include enhanced crossings, intersection safety upgrades, and speed humps, prioritized near schools and areas with higher speeding. These elements are also part of the build a strategy for safer bikeway facilities. The work is divided into phases based on available funding.
-
Phase 3: Longer-term multimodal improvements plans include bike lanes, a Hazel Court neighborhood bikeway, and a southbound traffic diverter at Harvard Avenue. Bike connectivity will be addressed once funding is identified.

May 2025 Open House Recap:
Thank you for those that joined us at the May 2025 public open house where DOTI presented several options for improving safety and access along S Irving St (Kentucky Ave to Amherst St.). The goal of the meeting and survey was to gather feedback and confirm which project elements, if any, represented community priorities.
What We Heard: Nearly 50 community members attended the open house, and more than 140 people completed the project survey, sharing a range of perspectives, with strong support for improving safety along the corridor. Priorities included a desire for slower speeds, safer crossings, lower traffic on the south side of the corridor, and desire to maintain access for the neighborhood.
Next Steps: DOTI is reviewing concepts and refining cost estimates and we will reach back out in early 2026 on next steps for project development.
Project Outreach:
Fall 2026
DOTI presented the final design for Phases 1 and 2 at a community open house held at Johnson Elementary on September 30th, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
Project One-Pager: This one‑pager summarizes the project description, the final design for Phases 1 and 2, and the current stage of the project.

Past Project Outreach:
June 2024 and May 2025 Outreach
DOTI presented several options for improving safety and access along S Irving St (Kentucky Ave to Amherst St). These outreach events, completed in June 2024 and May 2025, were designed to gather community feedback and help determine which project elements reflected neighborhood priorities.
Nearly 50 community members attended each open house, and more than 140 people completed the May 2025 project survey. Participants shared a range of perspectives, with strong overall support for improving safety along the corridor. Community priorities included slower vehicle speeds, safer crossings, reduced traffic volumes on the south side of the corridor and maintaining access for neighbors.
Community feedback also addressed potential multimodal improvements such as bike lanes and bikeway connections. While these received support, residents prioritized reducing speeds, addressing crashes, and improving pedestrian crossings, priorities that also build safer conditions for bikeway facilities.
2020-2022 Outreach
DOTI previously developed multiple design iterations for this corridor and collected feedback as part of the West Denver Safer Streets process (2020–2022). The project has since transitioned into the Traffic Calming Program, which is now preparing the first two phases for implementation.
Next Steps:
DOTI intends to start implementing Phase 1 early in 2027. Phase 1 is funded; Phase 2 will advance as funding becomes available. This sequence allows DOTI to first deliver the community’s highest-priority safety improvements and then evaluate conditions along the corridor before determining next steps for phase 3.
