Climate Action in the Community

There a lots of ways to take climate action in Denver. Getting involved can make your neighborhood healthier and improve your quality of life. Here are some programs that make it easy to take action:

Community Climate Needs Assessment

We talked to folks in high-needs neighborhoods to learn what climate solutions matter most to them. Their ideas helped the city decide how to invest money from the Climate Protection Fund.

Equitable Community Tree Planting Initiative

Trees keep neighborhoods cooler and healthier. Some parts of Denver have far fewer trees than others. So the city is planting 2,100 new trees to help reduce heat and improve quality of life.

Expanding Electric Vehicle Charging Citywide

You can find public EV chargers across Denver. More chargers make electric vehicles easier to use. You can also report any problems with city-owned chargers you find.

Sustainable Neighborhoods

Neighborhood groups can get resources and recognition from the city for leading local sustainability projects. This program helps communities become greener and more connected.

Certifiably Green Denver

Denver helps small businesses save money and reduce waste. The program gives step-by-step guidance to help businesses use less energy, create less trash, and earn a green certification from the city.

Climate Champions

We are working with Denver Public Schools to support student-led climate projects. Up to $225,000 is available for projects that improve air quality, use clean energy, or promote climate justice.

Denver Community Solar Program

Denver is building 16 community solar gardens. These solar gardens let Denverites who cannot put solar panels on their homes still enjoy clean, affordable energy.

Denver’s Universal Recycling and Composting Ordinance

Starting in September, 2026, multifamily buildings and food businesses, and events to provide access to composting and recycling services. It also requires non-residential buildings to provide access to recycling services.

Disposable Bag Fee for Businesses

Businesses in Colorado can no longer give out single-use plastic bags. We provide support to help businesses switch to reusable options and explain the rules and possible penalties.

Energize Denver Building Performance Policy

This policy helps buildings use less energy and improve comfort. Buildings 25,000 sq. ft. and larger must meet specific energy-saving goals. Buildings 5,000–24,999 sq. ft. must complete certain energy-efficient upgrades.

Green Jobs

We are creating training and career pathways for green jobs, especially for people from under-resourced communities. These jobs support a stronger, climate-resilient future.
